1956 Lyman

The first coat of white paint goes on the hull. The project moves forward.Note the new splash guard on the left.

Now the boat is turned over. The new keel is in place and the boat is masked for the first coat of paint.

Stripping and sanding the old hull takes time but is well worth the effort.Once the old paint is gone the boat will be turned over and the new keel installed.

Now the boat is starting to shape up. The splash guards will go on right after the new keel. Followed by a fresh coat of white paint.

The exterior keel is as rotten as the interior keel. A replacement is needed.

After the interior is taped the primer coat is applied to the floor area. The center board and one of the side pieces gives one the impression of things to come. After the floor is painted the floor pieces will be installed as well as the side rails that will seperate the painted  from the varnished areas.

This piece was more rotten than not so a new keel board will replace the old one.Here we see the cut out work in progress.

The bungs are placed over the outwale screws creating a smooth finished surface

Lauren is on spring break from college this week so we put her to work.There are some small holes as well as screw holes that need to be covered by bungs. Lauren is making bungs on drill the press.

 

The in-wales are applied to both sides of the boat.Brass screws secure the wales and the holes filled with wood bungs for a clean finish.I think Miss Jamaica approves of the progress made this week.

After the wale is shaped and trimmed it is moved down enough so that the starboard outwale can be fitted into place. The more hand available for this part of the job, the better. Here Larry Honeywell lends a hand. Between the three of us the starbard outwale is clamped into place.Now we need to give the wood time to cool so the clamps are left in place and lunch is the next order of business.

It is a rainy day but warm enough to use the steam box. The aqua colored pipe is fitted with covers at both ends and the white oak is heated to *200 degrees so that it can be bent without breaking. The wales are scarffed to make them long enough bow to stern.

Pete removes the piece from the steamer and quickly places it along the port side. With Holly assisting at the stern, the wale is clamped in place at about one foot intervals the length of the boat. The clamps are adjusted to hold the wale even with the edge of the planking.Pete hand cuts the excess from the bow.

The Transom knee and ribs are fitted together at the stern. A good way to end the work week.

Beautifully shaped mahogany transom knee strengthens the   stern section of the boat. Note the spaces to accommodate the ribs pieces.

The ribs are individually cut and shaped to fit and they are laminated together for strength. This process takes a lot of time because the fit has to be just right.
